Information on the 93rd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (2nd Notice)

As previously informed, the organizers have been seriously studying the format for convening the 93rd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA 2020), based on careful monitoring of the developments since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and the current circumstances. As a result, at the recent board meeting of the Japanese Orthopaedic Association held on Thursday, March 19, unfortunately, it was decided that it will not be possible to hold the JOA 2020 in Fukuoka from May 21 (Thursday) to 24 (Sunday) and furthermore that it will not be postponed.

In lieu of the physical Annual Meeting, it has been decided to convene an on-line Annual Meeting during a limited period starting in early June, 2020 (planned to be in session through the end of August). All speakers will be contacted by e-mail individually regarding registration of your presentation data and other matters.

We sincerely apologize for the great concern and inconvenience caused to all participants and everyone involved in the meeting.

This decision was rendered after extensive debate; in particular, we were obliged to consider that this Annual Meeting would gather a large number of orthopaedic surgeons and specialists. If the meeting, in a worst-case scenario, were to become the origin of a cluster infection, our responsibility vis-à-vis society at large as well as the potential impact on orthopaedic medical treatment and practice cannot be overestimated.

As the organizing committee that has been progressing meeting preparations up to now, this decision was made with great reluctance, yet we are now determined to put forth our best efforts with new resolve, to ensure the success of the on-line Annual Meeting.

We would greatly appreciate your understanding and support.
